Çankaya Municipality in Ankara opened its doors to an important panel focusing on empowering women in sports. The event, titled ‘Digital Violence Against Women in Sports,’ jointly organized by TED University Gender Studies Center and KASFAD (Women for Sports and Physical Activity Association), brought together experts and participants to discuss various aspects of the issue.

Çankaya Municipality Supports Women’s Empowerment in Sports

The Çankaya Municipality hosted a significant event aimed at contributing to the empowerment of women in the field of sports. The panel, ‘Digital Violence Against Women in Sports: Experiences, Policies,’ organized by the TED University Gender Studies Center and the Women for Sports and Physical Activity Association (KASFAD), brought together experts and participants from the sports world.

Experts Evaluate Digital Violence in Sports

The panel was moderated by Canan Koca, President of the KASFAD Board of Directors. Speakers at the event included World Champion Taekwondo athlete İrem Yaman and Pınar Öztürk, an academician working on safe sports environments.

Experiences, Risks, and Policies Discussed

During the panel, hate speech, harassment, threats, and similar forms of violence experienced by female athletes in digital environments were comprehensively evaluated. Speakers shared real-world examples of the problems faced by female athletes, and policy recommendations and solutions to prevent digital violence were discussed.

The event highlighted the growing concern over the online abuse faced by women in sports, emphasizing the need for robust policies and support systems to ensure a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes. The discussions aimed to raise awareness and foster a collaborative approach to combating digital harassment, ultimately promoting a more equitable and respectful sporting culture.

The participation of a world-renowned athlete like İrem Yaman underscored the severity and widespread nature of the issue, providing valuable insights from a practitioner’s perspective. Her experiences, coupled with the academic expertise of Pınar Öztürk, offered a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and potential interventions.

KASFAD, through its active involvement, continues to advocate for women’s rights and safety in sports, reinforcing its commitment to creating a supportive community for female athletes. The collaboration with TED University’s Gender Studies Center further strengthens the academic and research-based approach to addressing these complex social issues.

The panel concluded with a call to action for all stakeholders, including sports federations, government bodies, educational institutions, and digital platforms, to work together in implementing effective strategies to combat digital violence and protect the well-being of female athletes.
