As the New Year approaches, the Ankara Provincial Gendarmerie Command has alerted its personnel and relevant units about the possibility of ISIS attacks. According to Batu Bozkürk from Cumhuriyet newspaper, the December 19 memo specifically highlighted Ankara and Istanbul as potential targets.

Intelligence Suggests Simultaneous Attacks

The memo indicated that intelligence had been received regarding a plan for simultaneous attacks using explosive-laden vehicles in crowded areas within the next few days. Public markets and shopping malls were specifically identified as high-risk locations. The warnings detailed various potential attack methods, including armed assaults, suicide bombings, car bomb attacks, drone attacks, and vehicle ramming into crowds.

Motivation Behind the Alleged Attack Plans

The alleged attack intent is attributed to ISIS and other radical terrorist organizations seeking sensational actions, particularly during the New Year period. This comes as a response to the significant disruption of their operational capabilities through resolute counter-terrorism efforts both domestically and internationally. The memo stated, “According to instructions given by the so-called leadership to organization members, in order to prevent defections, boost morale among sympathizers, and create pressure and fear in public opinion, organization members may carry out independent ‘lone terrorist’ style actions in various locations chosen by them, with the initiative given to dormant cells.”

Heightened Security Measures and Intelligence Sharing

Personnel have been instructed to enhance security measures both within urban areas and at city entrances. They are also required to share any acquired intelligence with the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) and police units. This proactive approach aims to mitigate potential threats and ensure public safety during the festive period.

Previous ISIS Activity

This warning follows recent claims of responsibility by ISIS for an attack targeting HTS forces in Idlib, highlighting the group’s continued operational presence and intent to carry out acts of violence.

Public Safety and Awareness

Authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to law enforcement. The heightened security presence in public spaces is a precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors in Ankara and Istanbul.

The Turkish Gendarmerie’s warning underscores the ongoing threat posed by terrorist organizations and the continuous efforts by security forces to counter these threats, particularly during periods of increased public gatherings.
