Istanbul, December 23 – In a concerning incident during urban transformation demolition works in Avcılar, Istanbul, concrete debris from a collapsing 5-story building damaged the exterior of an adjacent building and a first-floor apartment. Ferda Balcı Çolak, the resident of the affected apartment, reported finding rubble and concrete fragments inside her home upon arrival.
Demolition of a 5-Story Building Leads to Unforeseen Damage
The incident took place on December 20, 2024, during the demolition of a 5-story building in Avcılar, which was scheduled for urban transformation. As an excavator worked on the structure, large pieces of concrete broke off, striking the facade of the neighboring building and a first-floor apartment.
Concrete Penetrates Two Rooms of an Apartment
Ferda Balcı Çolak’s apartment, located on the first floor, bore the brunt of the impact. Concrete fragments shattered her window and entered two rooms. Çolak reported that her balcony railing was damaged, and windowpanes were broken. Fortunately, she and her family were not home at the time of the incident, narrowly escaping a potential tragedy.
Upon returning home, Çolak overheard conversations from neighbors about concrete pieces entering an apartment through a window. Inside, she discovered her rooms filled with rubble and concrete debris.
Demolition Company Pledges to Cover Damages
Çolak stated that a representative from the demolition company visited her apartment after the incident, promising to repair the broken windows. However, she claims that no one from the company followed up afterward. It has since been confirmed that the demolition company will cover the costs of the damage incurred to the apartment.
This incident highlights the potential risks associated with urban transformation projects, particularly in densely populated areas. Authorities and demolition companies are expected to ensure stringent safety measures are in place to prevent such occurrences and protect public safety and private property.
