Tragic End to Search for Missing University Student in Istanbul

Istanbul, January 30 – The search for Deniz İbişler, a 25-year-old university student who had been missing for five days in Istanbul, has ended in tragedy. Authorities confirmed today that İbişler jumped into the sea in Beşiktaş on the night of January 25, just hours after speaking with his father.

İbişler, who resided in Eyüpsultan, was last heard from on the evening of January 24, a Saturday, when he spoke to his father, Yüksel İbişler, before turning off his phone. This initiated a five-day search operation involving various authorities and family members.

Last Known Movements and Father’s Account

According to information obtained by AHaber, İbişler met with a friend in Koşuyolu, Kadıköy, on the evening of January 24. After their meeting, his friend dropped him off at the Acıbadem metrobus station. İbişler then took the metrobus to Mecidiyeköy, where he was supposed to transfer to the M7 metro line to go home. However, it was learned that he left the metro station without boarding the train, possibly due to a 28-minute wait for the metro.

Yüksel İbişler, Deniz’s father, stated that his son’s last seen status on WhatsApp was at 6:00 PM on January 24. He revealed that Deniz had been struggling with depression since returning from working abroad last summer. “He came back tense from abroad. He couldn’t find the quality of work and income he expected there. He was also upset about extending his schooling,” the father explained.

The father also mentioned that Deniz’s friend noted he had been sleepless and distracted for several days prior to his disappearance. “His friend said he had been sleepless for a few days, that his attention was scattered, and there might have been some orientation problems,” Mr. İbişler added, expressing concern that his son’s psychological state might have been a factor.

Security Footage Reveals Tragic Leap

The breakthrough in the investigation came from security camera footage. AHaber reporter Mehmet Karataş reported that Deniz İbişler was captured on camera at 1:03 AM on January 25, jumping into the sea from the vicinity of a cafe in Beşiktaş.

Further investigation, including tracking İbişler’s Istanbul Card usage, revealed his movements on January 25. “Deniz’s Istanbul Card was used on the M7 Metro Line at 00:02 AM on January 25. He was then seen walking from Mecidiyeköy towards the square. Deniz walked alone from Mecidiyeköy to Beşiktaş and was last seen by a cafe’s camera near the coast. The camera footage shows Deniz standing by the sea for 1-2 minutes before jumping in at 1:03 AM,” Karataş detailed.

Search and Investigation Continue

Following the discovery of the security footage, teams from the Deniz Limanı Branch Directorate immediately launched search operations for İbişler’s body in the sea. The police had previously secured the area and interviewed witnesses, including Deniz’s friend and family members, as part of their initial investigation.

The tragic incident has deeply affected his family and friends, who had been tirelessly searching for him. The authorities continue their efforts to recover İbişler’s body and to piece together the full circumstances leading to this unfortunate event.
