Major Loan Sharking Operation in Ankara and Diyarbakır: 18 Suspects Arrested
Ankara, February 14 – In a significant operation targeting organized crime, including “forming an organization to commit crime,” “loan sharking,” and “qualified robbery,” gendarmerie teams in Ankara and Diyarbakır have arrested 18 suspects. The operation, which saw 32 individuals initially detained, was coordinated by the Ankara West and Silvan Public Prosecutor’s Offices and the Gendarmerie General Command’s Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Department.
Investigation Uncovers Extensive Financial Activity
The investigation revealed that the suspects allegedly coerced victims into signing blank or high-value checks and promissory notes as collateral for high-interest loans. When victims were unable to repay, their assets were reportedly seized through threats and coercion. Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) data supported the findings, indicating a staggering 25.119 billion Turkish Liras in transaction activity across the suspects’ bank accounts.
Assets Worth 2.2 Billion Liras Confiscated
Authorities seized assets valued at approximately 2.2 billion Turkish Liras, believed to have been acquired through criminal proceeds. These assets included 123 immovable properties, 38 vehicles, and 180 bank accounts. During searches of the suspects’ residences and workplaces, numerous checks, promissory notes, title deeds belonging to different individuals, as well as weapons, digital materials, and documents were confiscated.
18 Suspects Sent to Prison
Following their processing at the gendarmerie, 32 suspects were referred to the courthouse. Of these, 18 were formally arrested by the court and sent to prison, while judicial control measures were imposed on 12 others.
Broader Context of Organized Crime Efforts
This operation is part of ongoing efforts by Turkish law enforcement to combat organized crime groups involved in financial exploitation. The coordinated action across multiple provinces highlights the determination of authorities to dismantle such networks and protect citizens from predatory practices.
