Ankara, February 15 – A large-scale operation, initiated in Ankara and carried out across 11 provinces, has resulted in the apprehension and subsequent arrest of 22 individuals suspected of phone fraud. The suspects allegedly impersonated police officers and prosecutors to deceive victims, primarily by claiming their names were implicated in terrorist activities.
Nationwide Operation Targets Phone Fraud Ring
The investigation, coordinated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, was spearheaded by the Anti-Fraud Bureau of the Public Order Branch Directorate. Authorities identified a criminal network that contacted individuals by phone, falsely identifying themselves as law enforcement officials. They would then inform victims that their names were linked to a terrorist organization and demand money and valuables.
According to official reports, the fraudsters would instruct victims to convert their money and jewelry into foreign currency and transfer it to accounts controlled by the perpetrators. This elaborate scheme reportedly led to a total of 87 million Turkish Liras (TL) being swindled from unsuspecting individuals.
22 Suspects Apprehended Across 11 Provinces
To dismantle the criminal organization, simultaneous raids were conducted across 11 provinces, with Ankara serving as the central hub. During the arrests, it was noted that the suspects often wore masks and hats when collecting the illicit funds from their victims, suggesting a deliberate attempt to conceal their identities.
Following their detention, the suspects underwent processing at the police department. Subsequently, all 22 individuals were transferred to the courthouse. After appearing before a judge, they were formally arrested and remanded into custody.
Modus Operandi: ‘Your Name is Involved in a Terrorist Organization’
The core tactic employed by the fraudsters involved instilling fear and urgency in their victims. By falsely claiming a connection to a terrorist organization, they exploited public concern for security and legal repercussions. This psychological manipulation enabled them to coerce victims into handing over substantial amounts of money and valuable possessions.
The investigation revealed that the victims’ funds and valuables were systematically converted into foreign currency before being transferred to the fraudsters’ accounts. This method aimed to obscure the money trail and complicate efforts to recover the stolen assets.
