How to Make Intentions for Fasting (Niyyah)
Making an intention (niyyah) is a fundamental condition for the validity of fasting. While a heartfelt intention is sufficient, it is commendable to express it verbally. Waking up for sahur is also considered an intention.
- For Ramadan Fasts: The period for making an intention for Ramadan, vowed, and voluntary fasts extends from sunset until just before imsak of the next day (approximately 10 minutes before). However, for an intention made after imsak to be valid, one must not have consumed any food or drink, or engaged in any acts that invalidate the fast, since imsak. Otherwise, making an intention during the day is not permissible. It is sufficient to make a general intention such as "I intend to fast tomorrow." However, it is more virtuous to make the intention the night before and specify "I intend to fast for tomorrow’s Ramadan." A separate intention is required for each day of Ramadan.
- For Missed, Expiatory, or Vowed Fasts (Unspecified Time): For these types of fasts, the intention must be made from sunset until at least the time of imsak. When making intentions for these fasts, it is necessary to specify the type, such as "I intend to fast for a missed, expiatory, or vowed fast."
- According to the Shafi’i School: For all fasts except voluntary ones, the intention must be made the night before. If the intention is not made by imsak, the fast for that day is not valid. For voluntary fasts, the intention can be made until just before noon.
By adhering to these timings and guidelines, Muslims in Ankara can fulfill their religious obligations during Ramadan with peace of mind.
