ANKARA, (DHA) – German Foreign Minister Johann David Wadephul will pay a working visit to Turkey tomorrow, March 12, 2026. The visit aims to strengthen multi-dimensional bilateral relations and prepare for the third meeting of the Turkey-Germany Strategic Dialogue Mechanism.
Strategic Dialogue and Economic Cooperation to Take Center Stage
According to information obtained from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Wadephul will hold discussions with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan. Minister Fidan is expected to emphasize that the third meeting of the ‘Turkey-Germany Strategic Dialogue Mechanism’, scheduled for May 18, 2026, in Berlin, will provide additional value to the ongoing multi-dimensional bilateral relations.
Furthermore, Minister Fidan is anticipated to highlight the importance of continuing joint efforts to develop commercial and economic relations within the framework of the 60 billion dollar bilateral trade volume target with Germany. This includes bilateral mechanisms such as the Economic and Trade Joint Committee (ETOK/JETCO) and the Energy and Mining Forum.
EU Accession Process and Regional Crises on the Agenda
During the meeting, bilateral cooperation topics in the defense industry sector will be addressed. Minister Fidan is also expected to express Turkey’s expectation for Germany to contribute to Turkey’s EU membership negotiation process and for the EU side to approach Turkey-EU relations with a strategic perspective.
Minister Fidan will convey Turkey’s expectations regarding issues on the EU relations agenda, including the modernization of the Customs Union and the Visa Liberalization Dialogue. He is also expected to draw attention to the Netanyahu government’s destabilization of the region, leading to conflict and wars, and will present Turkey’s stance on regional and global issues, particularly the situation in Gaza and the Palestinian question, the Russia-Ukraine war, and developments in Syria.
The visit underscores the ongoing commitment of both nations to engage in high-level discussions on critical bilateral, regional, and global matters, aiming for enhanced cooperation and stability.
