Istanbul, March 13 – The Istanbul Governor’s Office has initiated a new social responsibility project, ‘A Meal from the Heart,’ aimed at supporting low-income students across the city. Under this initiative, 20,000 children from disadvantaged families will receive a monthly allowance of 2,000 Turkish Liras (TL) on special canteen cards for use in school cafeterias.
Project Aims to Boost School Attendance and Well-being
The ‘A Meal from the Heart’ project, spearheaded by the Istanbul Children’s Foundation under the patronage of the Governorship, is being implemented in collaboration with the Provincial Directorate of National Education and the Social Assistance and Solidarity Foundation. The primary goal of the project is to strengthen students’ sense of belonging to their schools and to enable them to continue their education without facing the risks associated with being on the streets due to economic hardship.
Initially, 20,000 students in need will benefit from the program. The long-term objective is to expand the project to ensure 100,000 students have access to healthy and balanced nutrition throughout the academic year.
Governor Davut Gül: “No One Will Be Embarrassed”
Istanbul Governor Davut Gül elaborated on the project’s implementation, emphasizing transparency and dignity. “The income status of families is clear in our social assistance foundations. These children will be identified using transparent and objective criteria,” Governor Gül stated.
He further explained the mechanism: “We will give our children a card. The General Manager of Halk Bank is providing these cards. We will deposit 2,000 TL into these cards every month. Our children will only use this card to eat hot meals in school canteens. In this way, our children will be able to access lunch without anyone being embarrassed. We will eliminate the problem of absenteeism due to economic reasons.”
Addressing Economic Challenges in Education
The initiative comes at a critical time, as many families face economic pressures that can impact their children’s education. By providing direct support for school meals, the project aims to alleviate a significant financial burden on families and ensure that students can focus on their studies without the added worry of hunger.
The project is expected to have a positive impact on student attendance, academic performance, and overall well-being. It also highlights the commitment of the Istanbul Governorship and its partners to fostering a supportive educational environment for all children, regardless of their socio-economic background.
Future Expansion and Community Impact
While the initial phase targets 20,000 students, the ambition to reach 100,000 students underscores the scale of the need and the potential for widespread positive impact across Istanbul. Such initiatives are crucial in promoting social equity and ensuring that every child has the opportunity to thrive in their educational journey.
The ‘A Meal from the Heart’ project is a testament to the collaborative efforts of governmental and non-governmental organizations to address social challenges and build a more inclusive society. Its success will likely serve as a model for similar programs in other regions.
