Istanbul’s Water Reserves Dwindle as Dams Hit 46% Occupancy After Rainless March
Istanbul, March 18 – The water levels in Istanbul’s dams, crucial for the megacity’s water supply, have alarmingly decreased to 46% occupancy, a significant drop from 78% recorded at the same time last year. This critical situation is a direct consequence of a dry winter and a March that has seen virtually no rainfall, according to data released today.
The continuous decline in dam levels is raising concerns among authorities and residents alike. Last year, at this point, the city’s dams were nearly three-quarters full. However, this year’s arid conditions have severely impacted the water reserves.
Varying Levels Across Key Dams
While the overall occupancy rate stands at 46%, there are notable variations across individual dams supplying Istanbul:
- Elmalı Dam (Beykoz): 85.51%
- Ömerli Dam (Çekmeköy): 67.22%
- Darlık Dam (Şile): 60.9%
- Kazandere: 54.47%
- Istrancalar: 31.26%
- Alibey Dam: 34.73%
- Büyükçekmece Dam: 34.54%
- Sazlıdere Dam (Arnavutköy): 29.11%
- Terkos Dam (Arnavutköy): 29.41%
- Pabuçdere: 29.19%
The dams in Arnavutköy, specifically Terkos and Sazlıdere, show particularly low levels, hovering around 29%, indicating a more severe impact in those regions.
Impact of Insufficient Rainfall
The lack of precipitation during the crucial winter months, coupled with a rainless March, has prevented the dams from replenishing their reserves. Experts have been warning about the effects of climate change and the increasing frequency of dry spells, which directly threaten urban water security.
Authorities have yet to announce specific measures to address the dwindling water supply, but the current situation underscores the urgent need for water conservation efforts and long-term strategies to ensure sustainable water management for Istanbul’s vast population.
The ongoing trend of decreasing water levels highlights the vulnerability of large metropolitan areas to climatic shifts and emphasizes the importance of public awareness and participation in responsible water usage.
