Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Completes Cıkrıkçılar Slope Revitalization Project

Ankara, March 28 – The Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) has successfully completed the “Street Rehabilitation Project” on Cıkrıkçılar Slope, a historic commercial hub. This initiative, undertaken within the scope of the Ulus Historical City Center works, aimed to strengthen the area’s connection with its past and restore its historical identity.

51 Structures Renovated, Historical Identity Preserved

According to a statement from the ABB, the project involved the renovation of 51 structures. Among these, 5 were registered historical buildings, and 46 were unregistered. For the registered structures, interventions were made in accordance with conservation principles, highlighting their authentic architecture. For the unregistered buildings, façade arrangements were applied to ensure harmony with the street silhouette, creating an aesthetic and holistic appearance.

Hüner Yonga, Application Chief of the ABB Department of Urban History, Promotion, and Tourism, stated that the project aimed to both preserve the region’s historical and cultural identity and improve the physical condition of the structures, creating a more orderly and aesthetic street view.

Enhanced Durability and Modern Aesthetics

As part of the project, dilapidated roofs were renewed, and worn-out roof coverings were replaced to enhance the durability of the buildings. On the facades, damaged plasters were removed, window frames were renewed, and cleaning work was carried out. Furthermore, all workplaces transitioned to standard illuminated box letter signs, establishing a uniform and corporate appearance throughout the street.

Yonga emphasized, “The historical commercial identity of Cıkrıkçılar Slope has been preserved, while the physical environmental conditions have been significantly improved. With the completion of this project, the region has gained a more orderly, aesthetic, and Ankara’s historical city identity-worthy appearance for both tradesmen and pedestrians.”

A Step Towards a More Vibrant Historical Center

This project is expected to contribute significantly to the revitalization of the Ulus Historical City Center, making Cıkrıkçılar Slope a more attractive and functional area for residents and visitors alike. The comprehensive renovation work ensures that the historical essence of the area is maintained while providing modern amenities and an improved urban environment.

The successful completion of this project demonstrates ABB’s commitment to preserving Ankara’s rich heritage and fostering urban development that respects the city’s historical fabric. The improved infrastructure and aesthetic appeal are anticipated to boost local commerce and enhance the overall experience for those who frequent this important part of Ankara.

The municipality continues its efforts to implement similar projects in other historical areas of the city, aiming to create a harmonious blend of historical preservation and contemporary urban living.
