Istanbul’s Morning Commute Plagued by Heavy Rain and 74% Traffic Congestion

Istanbul, Turkey – Heavy rainfall began overnight and continued into Monday morning, significantly impacting traffic across Istanbul. The city’s main arteries experienced considerable congestion, with vehicles moving at a crawl, as the first day of the week commenced with challenging conditions for commuters.

Traffic Intensifies Across the City

According to data released by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality, traffic intensity reached 74% as of 08:00 AM. This surge in congestion was particularly noticeable on bridge crossings and at the junction points of the TEM and D-100 highways, where vehicles struggled to advance.

The adverse weather conditions also led to widespread disruption in sea travel. Due to a storm in the Marmara Sea, numerous ferry services operated by İDO and BUDO had been cancelled, further exacerbating the transportation challenges for residents relying on these routes.

The persistent rain, which started in the late hours of the night, is expected to continue throughout the morning, prompting authorities to advise caution for those commuting. The combination of the morning rush hour and the inclement weather created a perfect storm for traffic gridlock, highlighting the city’s vulnerability to such environmental factors.

Local authorities are monitoring the situation closely, and updates are being provided through official channels to inform the public about traffic conditions and alternative routes. Commuters are encouraged to allow extra travel time and consider public transport options where available, although these too are likely to face increased demand and potential delays.
