Istanbul’s Dams Reach 65.74% Capacity, Boosting Water Security

Istanbul, April 1, 2026 – The megacity of Istanbul has seen a significant boost in its water reserves, with dam occupancy rates reaching 65.74% as of April 1, 2026. This welcome increase of 1.19% within the last 24 hours comes after a period of heavy rainfall and melting snow in higher elevations, providing a much-needed ‘lifeline’ to the city’s water supply.

The latest data from the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (ISKI) indicates that the rising water levels have temporarily allayed fears of drought, offering a sigh of relief to Istanbul residents. Notably, critical dams on the European side have experienced a visible increase, with sources like Elmalı and Istrancalar nearing 100% capacity.

Rainfall and Snowmelt Drive Up Water Levels

The dramatic rise in dam levels is primarily attributed to the intense rainfall experienced in the final days of March, coupled with the melting of snow in the higher regions. On the morning of March 31, the general occupancy rate stood at 64.55%, demonstrating a rapid and substantial improvement in just one day.

Experts are optimistic that this upward trend will continue, with projections suggesting that the overall dam levels could exceed 70% with the anticipated April showers. This presents a promising outlook for the city’s annual water needs.

Detailed Dam Occupancy Rates as of April 1, 2026

ISKI’s updated report for April 1, 2026, provides a detailed breakdown of the occupancy rates for Istanbul’s 10 dams:

  • Ömerli Dam: 90.93%
  • Darlık Dam: 81.13%
  • Elmalı Dam: 91.71%
  • Terkos Dam: 49.61%
  • Alibey Dam: 64.59%
  • Büyükçekmece Dam: 51.45%
  • Sazlıdere Dam: 43.04%
  • Istrancalar Dam: 98.69%
  • Kazandere Dam: 64.39%
  • Pabuçdere Dam: 34.77%

The figures highlight the varying capacities and current states of the dams, with some like Istrancalar and Elmalı almost completely full, while others still have significant room for further accumulation.

Future Outlook and Continued Monitoring

While the current situation is positive, authorities emphasize the importance of continued monitoring and responsible water usage. The long-term water security of Istanbul remains a critical concern, and sustainable management practices are essential.

The significant increase in dam levels provides a crucial buffer for Istanbul, a city that has faced water scarcity concerns in recent years. The current robust levels are a testament to the impact of natural weather patterns and offer a more secure water future for the immediate term.

The ISKI will continue to release regular updates on dam occupancy rates, providing transparency and keeping the public informed about the city’s water resources.
