New Support for Urban Transformation in Istanbul on the Horizon
Istanbul, April 3 – New support initiatives are set to be unveiled today, aimed at accelerating urban transformation in Istanbul, a city with an estimated 1.5 million risky housing units. The announcement comes as the ‘Half of It Is Ours’ campaign, which provides 1,875,000 TL in support for each apartment, continues.
Murat Kurum, Minister of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, made the announcement via his social media account. He stated that the new support package would be detailed today, emphasizing the government’s commitment to making Istanbul more resilient against potential disasters.
Key Developments in Urban Transformation
Minister Kurum also highlighted the completion of 591 residences and 28 workplaces within the Ümraniye Hekimbaşı Urban Transformation Project. The draw for these units is scheduled to take place today at 2:00 PM. “We are not stopping for a resilient Istanbul; we are accelerating even further. In the last three months, following our key deliveries in Ataşehir, Beyoğlu, and Kâğıthane, we have now completed the transformation of 591 residences and 28 workplaces in Ümraniye Hekimbaşı Neighborhood. We are drawing lots tomorrow (today). We are also announcing our new good news for Istanbul from Ümraniye,” Kurum stated.
The ongoing efforts reflect a broader strategy to systematically address and renew the city’s vulnerable building stock. The ‘Half of It Is Ours’ campaign has been a significant step in this direction, providing substantial financial backing to property owners willing to participate in the transformation process.
Addressing Istanbul’s Housing Challenges
Istanbul faces considerable challenges in urban planning and disaster preparedness, particularly concerning its older and structurally unsound buildings. The government’s focus on urban transformation is a critical component of its strategy to mitigate risks associated with seismic activity and to improve the overall quality of life for its residents.
The new support package is expected to introduce additional incentives and mechanisms to further encourage property owners and developers to engage in urban renewal projects. Details regarding the nature of these new supports, including potential financial aid, regulatory facilitations, or other forms of assistance, are eagerly awaited by stakeholders in the construction and real estate sectors, as well as by residents living in at-risk areas.
These initiatives are part of a continuous effort to modernize Istanbul’s infrastructure and housing, ensuring that the city is better equipped to handle future challenges and provide safer living environments for its growing population. The emphasis on accelerated transformation underscores the urgency and importance placed on these projects by the Ministry.
The announcement from Ümraniye is anticipated to provide a clear roadmap for the next phase of Istanbul’s urban transformation journey, offering hope and practical solutions for many of the city’s residents.
