Istanbul, April 22 – The Istanbul Strait will be temporarily closed to maritime traffic tomorrow, April 23, 2026, to facilitate the 7th Presidential International Yacht Races. This announcement was made by Şehir Hatları, the city’s ferry operator, through its official website today.

Strait Closure for Presidential Yacht Races

The closure, scheduled for April 23, 2026, is a direct consequence of the prestigious 7th Presidential International Yacht Races. Şehir Hatları’s statement on their website, “sehirhatlari.istanbul”, confirmed the impending disruption to regular maritime operations. “Due to the 7th Presidential International Yacht Races to be held on April 23, 2026, the Istanbul Strait will be closed to maritime traffic. In this context, our services on the lines specified below will not be carried out,” the announcement read.

Impact on Ferry Services

As a result of the Strait’s closure, several ferry services operated by Şehir Hatları will be temporarily suspended. Passengers are advised to check the official Şehir Hatları website for a comprehensive list of affected routes and updated schedules. The move aims to ensure the safety and smooth conduct of the international yachting event.

Background of the Event

The Presidential International Yacht Races are a significant annual event, drawing participants and spectators from around the globe. The 7th edition of these races underscores Istanbul’s role as a prominent international maritime hub and a host for major sporting events. While the closure will undoubtedly cause some inconvenience for daily commuters, it is a necessary measure for the successful execution of such a large-scale event.

Previous Incidents and Safety Measures

The announcement comes on the heels of other recent maritime news in the region. In a separate incident, one person tragically lost their life in a yacht fire in Bakırköy, which was swiftly extinguished by fire department teams. Such events highlight the critical importance of safety protocols and efficient management of maritime traffic, especially during large-scale events like the upcoming yacht races.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to plan their travel accordingly, taking into account the temporary closure of the Istanbul Strait and the resulting changes in ferry schedules. Further updates regarding the Strait’s reopening and the resumption of normal services will be provided by Şehir Hatları and relevant maritime authorities.
