Bold Thefts Plague Yachts in Istanbul’s Fatih District
Istanbul, May 3 – A series of brazen thefts has rocked the Fatih Cibali neighborhood in Istanbul, where multiple yachts docked along the shore have been targeted by audacious thieves. Security camera footage has captured the incidents, revealing the culprits’ methods and even a peculiar interaction with a yacht crew member.
Thieves’ Modus Operandi: From Yacht to Yacht
Over the past week, several incidents of theft have been reported from yachts moored in the Fatih Cibali area. The perpetrators gained access by opening boat windows, then proceeded to steal a variety of items from the cabins, including laptop computers, sunglasses, alcoholic beverages, and other valuables. The total value of stolen goods has not yet been disclosed, but yacht owners are expressing significant concern.
Security camera recordings show the suspects moving between boats by jumping from one to another. In one instance, they were seen stealing fishing equipment and other materials they found on deck before entering the cabins.
Unbelievable Encounter: Thief Asks for Directions
One of the most astonishing moments captured on CCTV shows a thief entering the cabin of a yacht where a crew member was sleeping. The crew member, awakened by noises, confronted the intruder. Instead of fleeing, the thief engaged in conversation, reportedly asking for directions to Yenikapı before being escorted off the boat by the staff member.
Erdoğan Kuş, one of the yacht owners, recounted the unsettling events: “We initially thought it was a one-off incident on April 24th. Around 8:30 in the morning, they broke into 4-5 boats, taking 2-3 computers, a television, and whatever valuables they could find. But then, on May 1st, they returned in the morning. A crew member was sleeping inside, and the thief actually spoke to him, asking for directions. After that, they entered other boats, taking our computer and some other valuable items. They even emptied the mini-bar, stealing 20-30 bottles of expensive alcohol.”
Investigation Underway as Yacht Owners Seek Justice
The Fatih Police Department has launched an investigation into the repeated thefts. Authorities are reviewing the security footage and gathering statements from yacht owners and witnesses. The incidents have raised questions about the security measures in place along the Fatih Cibali coastline and the need for increased patrols.
Yacht owners are urging the police to intensify their efforts to apprehend the responsible individuals and prevent further occurrences. The community is concerned about the audacity of the thieves and the potential for greater financial losses if the situation is not brought under control.
Impact on Local Maritime Community
The thefts have created a sense of unease among the local maritime community in Fatih. Many boat owners rely on their vessels for livelihood or leisure and are now faced with the prospect of increased security costs and the emotional toll of having their property violated. The incident highlights the vulnerability of docked boats to opportunistic criminals.
Local businesses in the Cibali neighborhood, which often cater to yacht owners and crew, are also expressing concern about the potential negative impact on tourism and maritime activity in the area if security issues persist.
The police have assured the public that all necessary steps are being taken to identify and arrest the suspects. They have also advised yacht owners to enhance their security measures, including installing additional alarms and surveillance systems, and to report any suspicious activity immediately.
This series of events serves as a stark reminder for boat owners to remain vigilant and to take proactive steps to protect their valuable assets.
