Fake Gold Operation in Zeytinburnu: Two Suspects Detained, 28.5 Million Lira Seized

Istanbul, May 6 – An operation targeting fake gold production in Zeytinburnu, Istanbul, led to the seizure of counterfeit gold valued at approximately 28.5 million Turkish Lira and the detention of two suspects. The operation was carried out yesterday morning by the Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command’s Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Branch Directorate, under the coordination of the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.

Details of the Operation

The operation focused on an address identified in Zeytinburnu as a hub for the production of counterfeit gold. During the searches, law enforcement officials discovered and seized a total of 4,252 grams of fake gold, packaged and ready for sale. This included 1,530 pieces of counterfeit gold in 1, 5, and 10-gram denominations, with an estimated market value of 28.5 million Turkish Lira.

In addition to the fake gold, significant manufacturing equipment was also confiscated. These included 280 plastic molds, 13 metal molds, 1,010 fake gram gold packaging materials, one pressing machine, and one paper and pleat punching machine. These items are believed to have been used in the large-scale production of the counterfeit gold.

Suspects Detained and Investigation Continues

Two suspects were detained in connection with the fake gold operation. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, with authorities working to uncover the full extent of the counterfeiting network and any other individuals involved. The operation underscores the continuous efforts of Turkish law enforcement to combat economic crimes and protect the financial security of the country.

Context of Economic Security Threats

The Istanbul Provincial Gendarmerie Command’s Anti-Smuggling and Organized Crime Branch Directorate has been actively working on cases related to ‘counterfeiting in values considered equal to money (gold),’ which poses a significant threat to economic security. This particular operation is part of a broader strategy to crack down on such illicit activities that undermine the integrity of the financial system.

Recent Local News in Istanbul

This operation follows other significant law enforcement actions in Istanbul. Recently, 21 suspects were detained in Istanbul in connection with an embezzlement scheme worth 72 million Turkish Lira carried out through an association. These events highlight the ongoing efforts of authorities to combat various forms of crime in the city.

The seized fake gold and manufacturing equipment are currently under examination as part of the ongoing investigation. Further details are expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
