Second Wave Operation Targets Üsküdar Municipality Corruption

Istanbul, May 19 – Seven individuals have been arrested and subsequently jailed in a second wave operation targeting alleged bribery in exchange for occupancy permits within certain construction projects under the responsibility of Üsküdar Municipality. The suspects were taken into custody on May 15 and, following police procedures, were referred to the courthouse, where they were remanded in custody by the court.

Investigation into Alleged Bribery for Occupancy Permits

The Istanbul Financial Crimes Unit initiated an investigation in coordination with the Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, focusing on the crime of ‘extortion’. The investigation revealed that financial benefits were allegedly demanded from contractors and business facilitators in exchange for occupancy permits for construction projects within the Üsküdar Municipality’s jurisdiction. The demands were made under the pretext of project inconsistencies in occupancy permit applications.

It was determined that these demands were shaped by evaluations in which high-level executives also participated, and that occupancy permits were approved for structures that were otherwise non-compliant. The investigation concluded that the financial benefits were provided through various channels, including cash, company accounts, and other means. The second wave operation on May 15 led to the arrest of seven individuals.

All Suspects Remanded in Custody

After completing their procedures at the police department, the seven suspects were transferred to the courthouse. The court subsequently ordered their arrest and sent them to prison. The investigation into the alleged corruption continues as authorities delve deeper into the extent of the illicit activities.

This operation is part of a broader effort to combat corruption and ensure transparency in public administration. The authorities have reiterated their commitment to pursuing all individuals involved in such illegal activities, regardless of their position or influence.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced in combating corruption within local government bodies and underscores the importance of stringent oversight and accountability measures to prevent such occurrences in the future. Further developments in the case are anticipated as the investigation progresses.
