Driver Receives 4 Years and 5 Months for Fatal Pedestrian Crossing Accident in Ankara, Released from Custody

Ankara, May 22 – Yasin Aloğlu, the driver who struck and killed 14-year-old Elif Güner at a pedestrian crossing in Ankara, has been sentenced to 4 years and 5 months in prison for ‘causing death by conscious negligence.’ The court also ruled for his release from custody.

The Tragic Accident

The accident occurred on February 19 at a pedestrian crossing in front of the Ministry of National Defense lodgings on Turan Güneş Boulevard. Elif Güner, a 9th-grade student, was attempting to cross the road when she was hit by a car driven by Yasin Aloğlu. Allegations suggest that Aloğlu was driving at high speed and swerving between lanes. Elif Güner was dragged approximately 50 meters and, despite medical intervention, succumbed to her injuries. Her funeral was held at Karşıyaka Cemetery. Aloğlu was arrested and remanded in custody following the incident.

Investigation and Indictment

The Ankara Public Prosecutor’s Office completed its investigation and prepared an indictment, seeking Aloğlu’s punishment for ‘causing death by conscious negligence.’ The indictment was accepted by the Ankara 68th Criminal Court of First Instance.

Court Proceedings and Verdict

During the second hearing of the case at the Ankara 68th Criminal Court of First Instance, the detained defendant Yasin Aloğlu, along with Elif Güner’s mother Tuğba Güner, father Dündar Güner, brother Arda Güner, and their lawyers, were present. The judge announced that due to insufficient space, members of the press and other observers would not be allowed into the courtroom.

In his defense, Yasin Aloğlu stated that he unintentionally caused the accident and requested his release. The Güner family, on the other hand, demanded that the defendant be given the maximum possible sentence.

The court ultimately sentenced Yasin Aloğlu to 4 years and 5 months in prison for ‘causing death by conscious negligence.’ Additionally, the court ordered Aloğlu’s release from custody.
