Istanbul, May 21 – Three Turkish Airlines (THY) planes carrying activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, who were detained by the Israeli army in international waters, arrived in Istanbul today. The activists were on a mission to break the Gaza blockade and deliver vital humanitarian aid when their convoy was intercepted. The planes, which departed from Israel, landed at Istanbul Airport, where the activists were welcomed by their families and various officials in the VIP Lounge.
Activists Receive Warm Welcome Amidst Injury Concerns
Upon arrival, several injured activists were immediately transferred to waiting ambulances at the airport. Following the reception, the activists are expected to proceed to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Institute for necessary examinations as part of an investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Speaking to the press, AK Party Deputy Chairman and Party Spokesperson Çelik stated that the Global Sumud Flotilla embarked on its journey as a “humanity flotilla” to raise awareness about Gaza and amplify the voice of humanity. Çelik emphasized, “All our brothers and sisters undertook this journey in the name of humanity, human dignity, to stand against the genocide in Gaza, against the genocide network, and they conveyed the message of humanity. Unfortunately, they also suffered some abuses there, but they continue to convey that powerful message.”
Violation of International Law Highlighted by Turkish Officials
Deputy Foreign Minister Hacı Ali Özel, in his statement, pointed out that this incident marks the third time Israel has violated international law in international waters in this context. Özel shared that among the 422 civilian activists on the three planes, 85 are Turkish citizens, and the remaining 337 are citizens of approximately 40 different countries. He noted that the activists, hailing from six continents, represent a global civil movement.
Özel added, “This is an intervention made against activists who set out to provide humanitarian aid to the people, the victims, the needy in Gaza, in international waters, in front of the eyes of the whole world. The whole world condemns this. As in the past, we will continue to stand by our citizens wherever they may be in the world, at all times.”
Türkiye’s Ongoing Support for Its Citizens Abroad
Çelik further reiterated Türkiye’s commitment to its citizens, stating that the injured activists being transported by ambulances clearly demonstrate the need for humanity to stand united against such atrocities. He urged the world to understand the message conveyed by these noble individuals from all corners of the globe, who stand for human dignity and values.
The incident underscores the ongoing tensions surrounding the Gaza blockade and the international community’s efforts to provide humanitarian assistance to the region. The Turkish government has consistently advocated for the rights of the Palestinian people and has been a vocal critic of Israeli policies in the area.
Future Steps and International Implications
The investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office will likely focus on the circumstances of the activists’ detention and any alleged abuses they may have suffered. This event is expected to draw further international attention to the humanitarian situation in Gaza and the broader Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The arrival of the activists in Istanbul marks a significant moment in the ongoing efforts to highlight the plight of Gaza and to challenge the blockade through peaceful means. The incident also serves as a reminder of the complexities and sensitivities involved in delivering aid to besieged regions.
