Eight Suspects Detained in Istanbul for Allegedly Funding ISIS Under “Humanitarian Aid” Guise
Istanbul, June 12 – An operation in Istanbul led to the apprehension of eight suspects accused of providing financial support to the ISIS terrorist organization by collecting money under the guise of “humanitarian aid.” The arrests followed an extensive investigation into the financing activities of the terrorist group.
The operation was initiated after the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) prepared a comprehensive analysis report on the financial sources of the ISIS terrorist organization in Istanbul. MASAK’s findings revealed that the suspects attempted to disguise their money transfers as “humanitarian aid.”
Deceptive Financial Transactions Uncovered
Investigations into the suspects’ bank account activities uncovered the use of deceptive descriptions such as “aid,” “for a sister in need,” “rent assistance,” and “need.” These terms were used to mask the true purpose of the financial transactions, making them appear as legitimate charitable contributions.
A significant number of the suspects were found to have no affiliation with any civil society organizations (CSOs), and the volume of money traffic in their accounts was inconsistent with the declared purposes. Furthermore, it was noted that extensive money transfers were made through these accounts to numerous individuals with prior criminal records for judicial proceedings.
Simultaneous Raids and Seizures
Security forces conducted simultaneous raids at the identified addresses. During these operations, eight suspects were successfully apprehended and taken into custody. Searches conducted at the suspects’ residences yielded significant evidence, including:
- 1 unlicensed pistol
- 2 blank-firing pistols
- Numerous cutting and piercing tools
- A large quantity of digital materials believed to shed light on organizational activities
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to fully uncover the extent of the suspects’ involvement in financing the terrorist organization and to identify any further connections.
