Ankara, Turkiye – In a major crackdown on illegal online betting, 44 suspects have been remanded in custody following a coordinated operation by Ankara police. The operation, conducted simultaneously across the city, resulted in the apprehension of 86 individuals suspected of involvement in illegal betting and virtual gambling.

Extensive Investigation Uncovers Billions in Transactions

The investigation, which has been ongoing since 2024, was coordinated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office’s Cybercrime Investigation Bureau and carried out by the Ankara Police Department’s Fraud Bureau teams. Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) analyses revealed a staggering 5.3 billion lira in financial transactions across bank and crypto asset accounts belonging to the suspects, who are believed to be operating within an organized structure.

Investigations determined that numerous individuals transferred money to illegal betting and virtual gambling sites. The suspects were found to have procured bank accounts for use on these sites and organized money transfers through them. They also attempted to complicate the tracking of these funds by transferring collected money to various bank and crypto asset accounts. Furthermore, it was discovered that the illegal betting sites, despite being subject to access bans, continued their operations by constantly changing their addresses.

The extensive work identified money inflows and outflows through 414,621 separate accounts linked to illegal betting and virtual gambling activities.

Suspects Deny Involvement, Claim Winnings

Following these findings, police teams launched simultaneous operations in Ankara, apprehending 86 suspects. During their statements, the suspects denied organizing illegal betting, explaining account movements exceeding 20 million lira by claiming, “I did not operate betting, I played betting, I won this money by playing.”

After completing their procedures at the police department, 44 of the 86 detained suspects were referred to the courthouse and subsequently remanded in custody by the court.

Broader Context of Cybercrime Crackdowns

This operation highlights the ongoing efforts by Turkish authorities to combat illegal online gambling and associated financial crimes. The scale of the financial transactions involved underscores the significant challenge posed by such illicit activities and the determination of law enforcement to disrupt these networks.

The successful coordination between the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the police department, along with the detailed financial analysis by MASAK, was crucial in identifying and apprehending the individuals involved in this large-scale operation. The continuous adaptation of illegal betting sites, such as changing their addresses to circumvent access bans, presents an ongoing challenge for authorities, requiring constant vigilance and advanced investigative techniques.

The outcome of this operation serves as a strong deterrent to those involved in illegal betting and virtual gambling, demonstrating the commitment of Turkish law enforcement to maintaining financial integrity and combating organized crime in the digital sphere.
