Istanbul, June 24 – In a significant operation aimed at preventing the illegal trafficking of cultural heritage, Istanbul police have seized 6,819 historical artifacts and 3,366 coins. Two suspects were apprehended in connection with the smuggling attempt.

Extensive Police Operation Targets Smuggling Ring

Teams from the Istanbul Police Department’s Anti-Smuggling Crimes Branch initiated an investigation to curb the illicit movement and sale of unregistered historical artifacts within the country, as well as their illegal export. The operation culminated in the discovery of a cache of historical items at a residence in Beykoz.

Technical and Physical Surveillance Leads to Arrests

Following a period of meticulous technical and physical surveillance, authorities identified a house in Beykoz believed to be harboring historical artifacts. A subsequent raid on the location led to the arrest of two suspects, who were then taken to the police department for processing.

Vast Collection of Artifacts from Diverse Civilizations

During the searches, a remarkable collection of 6,819 archaeological objects, inscriptions, and 3,366 coins were recovered. These artifacts are believed to originate from various historical periods and civilizations, including the Anatolian Seljuk, Great Seljuk, Urartian, Hittite, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Assyrian, Mesopotamian, Umayyad, Abbasid, and Ottoman eras. The seized items are considered to reflect the social lives, belief systems, artistic understandings, and economic activities of these ancient cultures.

Investigation Underway for Apprehended Suspects

The two suspects arrested in connection with the operation have been transferred to the police department, where they are undergoing further procedures. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of their involvement in the historical artifact smuggling network.
