ANKARA – Two suspects were detained and subsequently released under judicial control following an incident in the Ankara Courthouse cafeteria where a public prosecutor overheard a conversation regarding a potential bribery scheme to postpone a prison sentence.
Details of the Alleged Bribery Attempt
The incident unfolded when N.K., who was on leave from prison, allegedly sought assistance from his friend C.K. to postpone his sentence. C.K. reportedly told N.K. that his brother-in-law, G.Ş., who works as a clerk in the courthouse, could facilitate the process. A meeting was then arranged between N.K. and G.Ş. in the Ankara Courthouse cafeteria.
During this meeting, G.Ş. allegedly offered to arrange the sentence postponement for a fee of 100,000 Turkish Liras. Public Prosecutor Recep Ö., who happened to be in the cafeteria at the time, overheard the discussion. Suspicious of the conversation, the prosecutor immediately alerted police authorities.
Arrests and Initial Proceedings
Following the prosecutor’s report, G.Ş. and C.K. were taken into custody. N.K.’s statement was recorded as a complainant in the case. Proceedings were initiated against the suspects on charges of ‘Attempted Qualified Fraud’.
After their processing at the police department, G.Ş. and C.K. were transferred to the courthouse. They were subsequently released under judicial control, which includes a travel ban abroad.
Suspect’s Criminal Record Revealed
Further investigations conducted by police teams revealed that G.Ş. has an extensive criminal record, with a total of 17 prior offenses. These offenses include ‘Open Theft’, ‘Theft from a Car’, ‘Fraud’, ‘Damage to Property’, and ‘Pickpocketing’.
The investigation into the alleged bribery attempt is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the full scope of the incident and any potential broader implications. The swift action of the public prosecutor highlights the vigilance within the judicial system against corrupt practices.
