ISTANBUL – Medine Pamuk, the candidate from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), has been elected as the Deputy Mayor of Adalar Municipality. This development occurred after Adalar Mayor Ali Ercan Akpolat was arrested and subsequently suspended from his duties by the Ministry of Interior.
Arrest of Mayor Akpolat and Other Officials
On June 23, Mayor Ali Ercan Akpolat, along with Deputy Mayors Hüseyin Yılmaz and Fırat Durak, and council members Yavuz Çiftçioğlu and Mehmet Nuri Kara, were among 35 individuals arrested. Following these arrests, the Ministry of Interior officially suspended Akpolat from his position, necessitating an election for an acting mayor.
The Election Process for Deputy Mayor
The election for the Deputy Mayor was held today at the Neriman Erduman Conference Hall of Büyükada Şehit Murat Yüksel Primary School. The two main contenders were Medine Pamuk from the CHP and Kemal Türkyılmaz from the AKP.
A total of 7 council members cast their votes. The election proceeded through multiple rounds due to the initial lack of a decisive majority:
- First Round: Pamuk received 5 votes, Türkyılmaz received 1 vote, and there was 1 invalid vote.
- Second Round: Pamuk secured 5 votes, while Türkyılmaz received 2 votes.
- Third Round: The results remained consistent with the second round, with Pamuk receiving 5 votes and Türkyılmaz receiving 2 votes.
As a sufficient majority was not reached in the initial rounds, the election proceeded to a fourth and final round. In this decisive round, CHP’s Medine Pamuk once again secured 5 votes, leading to her election as the Deputy Mayor of Adalar Municipality.
Implications for Adalar Municipality
The election of Medine Pamuk as Deputy Mayor marks a significant transition for Adalar Municipality, particularly in the wake of the high-profile arrests of its former mayor and other key officials. Pamuk’s new role will involve overseeing the day-to-day operations and strategic direction of the municipality during this period of leadership change.
The arrests on June 23 have drawn considerable attention to the governance of Adalar, a district known for its historical significance and natural beauty. The Ministry of Interior’s decision to suspend Mayor Akpolat underscores the gravity of the situation and the commitment to maintaining administrative integrity.
The CHP, now with Medine Pamuk at the helm of the municipality’s executive functions, is expected to focus on ensuring continuity in public services and addressing the needs of Adalar’s residents. The political landscape of the district will likely be closely watched as the legal proceedings related to the arrested officials continue.
This event highlights the dynamic nature of local politics in Turkey and the swift actions taken by central authorities in response to alleged misconduct. The coming weeks and months will reveal the full impact of these changes on the administration and public life in Adalar.
