Istanbul Implements Ban on Fireworks and Pyrotechnics to Combat Forest Fires

Istanbul, July 2 – The Istanbul Governor’s Office has issued a comprehensive ban on the sale and use of fireworks, signal flares, torches, and similar explosive or flammable materials throughout the city. The prohibition, effective from July 16 to October 28, 2026, aims to prevent forest fires, which have seen an increase due to rising temperatures and heightened activity in forested areas.

Increased Forest Fire Risk Prompts Urgent Action

The decision comes as part of enhanced measures to mitigate the risk of forest fires, which have become a significant concern during the summer months. Earlier, a separate decree (Valilik Kararı No. 2026/1) had already restricted access to forested areas between June 8, 2026, and October 15, 2026. However, the escalating number of incidents necessitated additional precautions.

A written statement from the Istanbul Governor’s Office highlighted the rationale behind the ban: “With the current summer season and the observed increases in air temperatures, coupled with intensive human and vehicle movement in forested areas, and both intentional and negligent behaviors, it has become necessary to take additional measures to prevent potential forest fires.”

The statement explicitly outlines the scope of the new regulation: “Within this framework, the sale and use of fireworks, signal flares, torches, and similar explosive/flammable materials have been prohibited across Istanbul between July 16, 2026, and October 28, 2026.”

Details of the Ban and Its Implications

The ban covers a wide range of pyrotechnic products, including those commonly used for celebrations and signaling. This measure is expected to significantly reduce the potential ignition sources that could lead to devastating forest fires, especially in a city like Istanbul, which has extensive green spaces and forested regions susceptible to blazes.

Authorities emphasize that the decision is a proactive step to protect both natural resources and public safety. The enforcement of this ban will be stringent, with penalties for non-compliance yet to be fully detailed, but expected to align with existing regulations concerning public safety and environmental protection.

The Governor’s Office has urged all residents and visitors to Istanbul to adhere strictly to the new regulations and to exercise extreme caution, particularly when in proximity to forested areas. Public awareness campaigns are anticipated to inform the populace about the dangers of pyrotechnics and the importance of preventing forest fires.

This initiative reflects a broader national effort in Turkey to combat the increasing threat of forest fires, which have caused extensive damage across various regions in recent years. By implementing such bans, authorities aim to safeguard the country’s natural heritage and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
