14 Suspects Detained in Ankara for Robbery and Fraud Scheme

Ankara, March 24 – Fourteen suspects have been apprehended in Ankara following an investigation initiated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office. The individuals are accused of orchestrating a scheme involving online advertisements for sexual encounters, which then led to acts of robbery and fraud.

Investigation Reveals Pattern of Violence and Deception

According to a statement from the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the investigation, conducted by the Bureau for the Protection of the Family, Violence Against Women, and Sexual Offenses, uncovered a disturbing pattern. Men who contacted women advertising sexual encounters online were reportedly ambushed upon arrival at designated locations. The suspects, acting in concert, allegedly used weapons to intimidate and assault the victims, forcibly taking their money and valuables. These actions have been classified as ‘robbery’.

Furthermore, the suspects are accused of ‘fraud’, as they deceived victims into believing they would engage in sexual relations, thereby illicitly obtaining money through fraudulent means.

Police Operations Lead to Arrests

Through technical surveillance and wiretapping, authorities identified 23 suspects involved in 20 separate incidents. Arrest warrants were issued, and the Ankara Police Department’s Public Order Branch Office Robbery Bureau conducted operations that led to the apprehension of 14 individuals. Efforts to locate and arrest the remaining suspects are ongoing.

Details of the Criminal Modus Operandi

The criminal group reportedly exploited the anonymity of online platforms to lure unsuspecting victims. Once contact was established, the victims were directed to specific addresses where the perpetrators would carry out their illicit activities. The use of weapons and physical assault highlights the violent nature of the robberies, while the pretense of sexual encounters underscores the deceptive tactics employed for fraud.

The investigation aims to fully dismantle the criminal network and bring all perpetrators to justice. The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office emphasizes its commitment to combating such crimes and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
