Ankara, January 18 – Turkish authorities have successfully intercepted a large shipment of illicit drugs at the Hamzabeyli Customs area in Edirne, leading to the seizure of 220.7 kilograms of cocaine and 69 kilograms of skunk. The operation resulted in the arrest of one individual suspected of international drug trafficking.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, in a statement released on his social media account, confirmed the significant drug bust. He stated, “As a result of efforts by the Edirne Police Department’s Narcotics Crimes Branch, 220.7 kilograms of cocaine and 69 kilograms of skunk were seized during a search of a TIR truck within the Hamzabeyli Customs area.”
The Minister further added, “Legal proceedings have been initiated against the suspects for international drug trafficking. I congratulate our Edirne Governor, our Edirne Police Chief, our heroic police officers, and everyone who contributed. May God protect you.”
“We Have Declared War on Drugs”
Yerlikaya emphasized the government’s firm stance against drug-related crimes, declaring, “I want our nation to know that we have declared war on drugs. Drugs are a crime against humanity. We are waging this war not only for our country but for the sake of humanity.”
He underscored the comprehensive nature of the fight against narcotics, stating, “Our entire struggle against drugs, from the gang leaders to the street dealers, is to protect all our citizens, especially our youth.”
International Drug Trafficking Suspect Apprehended
The individual arrested in connection with the seizure is facing charges related to international drug trafficking. The investigation is ongoing to determine the full extent of the criminal network involved in this large-scale operation.
This latest success highlights the continuous efforts of the Turkish law enforcement agencies in combating drug smuggling and protecting public health and safety. The Hamzabeyli Customs area, located at a strategic border crossing, has been a focal point for such interdictions.
Authorities have not yet released further details regarding the origin or intended destination of the seized drugs, nor the identity of the arrested suspect. However, the sheer volume of the narcotics indicates a major international trafficking attempt.
The Interior Ministry reiterated its commitment to maintaining a zero-tolerance policy towards drug-related offenses and vowed to continue its relentless pursuit of those involved in such illicit activities.
This operation serves as a strong message to drug traffickers that Turkish security forces remain vigilant and determined to prevent the entry and distribution of illegal substances within the country and beyond its borders.
