Ankara, February 7 – Turkish Interior Minister Yerlikaya announced a significant drug bust at the Kapıkule border crossing in Edirne, where authorities seized 240 kilograms of skunk. The operation led to the apprehension of one suspect involved in the trafficking.

Extensive Drug Operation at Kapıkule Border

The operation was initiated following intelligence indicating that a drug shipment, specifically skunk, was being transported via a truck (TIR) through Edirne. Personnel from the Kapıkule Customs Enforcement Anti-Smuggling and Intelligence Branch Directorate, in coordination with other agencies, conducted a thorough search that led to the discovery of the illicit substance.

The seized drug, identified as skunk, weighed a total of 240 kilograms. This considerable amount highlights the scale of the smuggling attempt and the effectiveness of the intelligence and enforcement efforts.

One Suspect Apprehended

During the operation, authorities successfully apprehended one suspect believed to be directly involved in the drug trafficking. The suspect’s identity has not been released, but investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the network and any other individuals involved.

Minister Yerlikaya’s Statement

Interior Minister Yerlikaya provided details of the operation, emphasizing the commitment of Turkish authorities to combating drug trafficking. His statement underscored the importance of inter-agency cooperation and intelligence gathering in preventing such large-scale illicit activities.

The successful bust at Kapıkule is part of broader efforts by Turkish law enforcement to secure its borders and dismantle drug smuggling routes that often pass through the country. The Kapıkule border crossing, being one of Europe’s busiest land borders, is frequently targeted by smugglers attempting to transport various illicit goods.

Ongoing Fight Against Drug Trafficking

This incident follows a series of successful operations against drug trafficking in Turkey. Authorities continue to implement stringent measures and conduct regular checks at border crossings and within the country to curb the flow of illegal narcotics.

The seized skunk is expected to be destroyed following legal procedures, and the apprehended suspect will face charges related to drug trafficking. The investigation will aim to uncover the origins of the drug, its intended destination, and any larger criminal organizations involved.

The Interior Ministry reiterated its resolve to maintain a strong stance against all forms of organized crime, particularly drug trafficking, which poses a significant threat to public health and safety.
