Ankara, February 15 – Engin Akbadal, a 48-year-old man from Kayseri suffering from lymphoedema, commonly known as “elephantiasis,” was successfully transferred to Ankara for specialized medical treatment. Akbadal, whose weight reached 300 kilograms due to the condition, had been bedridden for the past five years.
Challenging Transfer from Kayseri to Ankara
The decision was made to continue Akbadal’s treatment at Ankara Etlik City Hospital. The transfer was a complex operation, requiring the demolition of a wall in his house to allow for his removal. A team of 25 people was involved in carefully moving Akbadal on a stretcher to an awaiting ambulance.
Akbadal expressed his joy and hope for recovery during the transfer. “My only wish is to regain my health and visit places with my family that I haven’t been able to see for 12 years. I am very excited. I hope to return home fully recovered. I am chasing my dreams,” he stated.
Lymphoedema: A Debilitating Condition
Engin Akbadal was diagnosed with lymphoedema approximately 12 years ago after experiencing sudden weight gain. Lymphoedema is a chronic condition characterized by swelling, typically in the limbs, caused by a blockage in the lymphatic system. If left untreated, it can lead to severe swelling, skin changes, and impaired mobility.
Akbadal’s condition had progressed to a point where he was unable to leave his home and became completely dependent on care. The significant weight gain further complicated his mobility and overall health.
Hopes for Recovery in Ankara
Following the challenging transfer, Akbadal was seen off by his loved ones with prayers for his recovery. The specialized facilities and medical expertise at Ankara Etlik City Hospital are expected to provide him with the best possible chance for improving his condition and regaining some independence.
The successful transfer highlights the dedication of medical teams and the importance of providing comprehensive care for patients with complex health needs. Akbadal’s journey to Ankara represents a new chapter in his fight against lymphoedema, fueled by hope and the support of his community.
