Investigation Launched by Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, specifically its Terrorism Crimes Investigation Bureau, initiated the operation based on directives issued to the Istanbul Police Department’s Counter-Terrorism Branch. The primary objective of the investigation was to uncover and expose the activities of the FETÖ/PDY armed terrorist organization.
Ankesör/Public Phone Communication and Informant Testimonies
The suspects were identified through their use of public or payphone communication, a clandestine method employed by the FETÖ/PDY for organizational communication. These individuals were found to have established contact using ankesör card systems in a manner consistent with the organization’s communication techniques. Furthermore, there were informant testimonies against them, indicating their involvement in the terror group’s activities. The operation targeted a total of 94 tax inspectors, who were either dismissed from their positions or were actively working within the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.
93 Suspects Apprehended, One Abroad
During the coordinated raids conducted across 11 provinces, 93 suspects were successfully apprehended. Authorities have confirmed that one of the targeted individuals is currently located abroad, and efforts to locate and apprehend this individual are ongoing.
Background on FETÖ/PDY
The FETÖ/PDY is designated as a terrorist organization by the Turkish government. It is accused of orchestrating the failed coup attempt in July 2016 and of infiltrating state institutions through its members. Operations targeting the group have been ongoing since the coup attempt, with numerous arrests and dismissals from public service.
Ongoing Efforts to Combat Terrorism
This latest operation underscores the Turkish government’s unwavering commitment to combating all forms of terrorism. Authorities continue to dismantle the organizational structures of groups like FETÖ/PDY, aiming to ensure national security and stability. The investigation is expected to shed more light on the extent of the organization’s infiltration within the Ministry of Treasury and Finance and potentially lead to further arrests.
The detainees are currently undergoing interrogation at the Istanbul Police Department’s Counter-Terrorism Branch. Further details regarding the investigation are expected to be released as the process unfolds.
