AKOM Issues Snow Warning for Istanbul: Cold Front Arriving Next Week
Istanbul, January 28 – The Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Disaster Coordination Center (AKOM) has issued a warning regarding a significant change in weather conditions for the city. While Istanbul bids farewell to January with rain, February is set to usher in colder temperatures and the possibility of snow. The strong southwesterly winds (Lodos) currently affecting the city are expected to be replaced by northerly winds and a sharp drop in temperature starting today.
February’s First Three Days Under Scrutiny
AKOM’s report, released on January 28, 2026, highlights that while no severe cold is anticipated until the end of January, a cold air mass from the north is expected to significantly impact the city between February 1st and 3rd. Temperatures are forecast to drop 3-5 degrees Celsius below seasonal norms during this period.
Snowfall Expected on Monday
The weekly weather report indicates a gradual shift towards colder and wetter conditions:
- January 28-29 (Wednesday-Thursday): Intermittent heavy rainfall will be effective, with temperatures ranging between 10-14 degrees Celsius.
- January 30 (Friday): Expected to be one of the wettest days of the week, with 5-15 kg of precipitation per square meter.
- Weekend (January 31 – February 1): Temperatures will rapidly decrease. Saturday will see temperatures drop to 8 degrees Celsius, while Sunday will reach 7 degrees, accompanied by intermittent rain.
- New Week (February 2, Monday): This day is projected to be the coldest of the week, with thermometers indicating 3 degrees Celsius. Rainfall is expected to turn into sleet and snow.
Residents are advised to prepare for the change in weather, with recommendations to wear coats and scarves as the city transitions from a mild January to a colder February.
