Balikli Greek Hospital Rises from the Ashes: Renovation Complete, Reopening in May

Istanbul, March 23, 2026 – The Balikli Greek Hospital in Istanbul, which endured a devastating fire four years ago that nearly trapped 104 individuals, has been meticulously restored. The elderly care section of the hospital, severely damaged in the blaze, has been rebuilt to a luxurious standard following directives from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and efforts by the Istanbul Governorship. The facility is now poised to reopen in May.

The fire had rendered a significant portion of the building, including its roof, unusable. The renovation project commenced after approximately 300 tons of debris were cleared from the site. The subsequent tender process led to a comprehensive restoration that has seen rooms completely refurbished with modern beds, televisions, bathrooms, and updated technical infrastructure. Lighting systems have been replaced, and the historical essence of the building has been preserved while integrating contemporary amenities. The hospital’s church section also underwent significant refurbishment.

A Rapid Recovery Under Presidential Patronage

Selçuk Atay, General Coordinator of the Balikli Greek Hospital Foundation, told Sabah that the institution’s building, which was severely damaged after the fire, was swiftly revitalized under the patronage of the President. Atay emphasized that the hospital, with its deep roots in the Ottoman era, is not merely a healthcare institution but also a crucial cultural heritage site where diverse faiths coexist. He highlighted the renovation as an exemplary project in preserving this rich legacy.

Elderly residents who were relocated to other hospitals after the fire are expected to return to the Balikli Greek Hospital upon its reopening. President Erdoğan is anticipated to attend the opening ceremony in May.

“Turkey is the Most Compassionate Country in the World”

Yorgo Vapuridis, an 88-year-old stage artist with 60 years of experience, who performed with Zeki Müren and sang Turkish classical music in both Turkish and Greek for numerous statesmen, expressed his profound gratitude. His room at the Balikli Greek Hospital, which he described as having been transformed into a museum, was tragically consumed by the flames. “The day our elderly home reopens its doors will be a day of celebration not only for us but for all of Istanbul. I am a child of 1,000-year-old Turkey, and I am proud of it. Because Turkey is the most compassionate country in the world. I thank our President for his efforts in the revival of the building,” Vapuridis stated.

A Legacy of Care and Coexistence

The Balikli Greek Hospital’s restoration underscores a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and ensuring continued care for its elderly residents. The project reflects not only a physical reconstruction but also a reaffirmation of the hospital’s historical significance as a place of healing and interfaith harmony in Istanbul.
