Istanbul, December 23 – During the demolition of a five-story building in Istanbul’s Avcılar district, concrete debris broke off and damaged the exterior of an adjacent building and a first-floor apartment. The incident occurred on Reşitpaşa Street in Avcılar Merkez Mahallesi.

Demolition Under Urban Transformation Initiative

The building, which was part of an urban transformation project, began demolition work on December 20. During the process, concrete pieces detached from the structure as a result of an excavator’s intervention. These pieces then struck the facade of the neighboring building and impacted a first-floor apartment.

Concrete Enters Two Rooms of Apartment

According to reports from DHA, the concrete debris shattered the window of Ferda Balcı Çolak’s first-floor apartment, penetrating two rooms. Çolak, whose balcony railing was also damaged and windows broken, stated that she and her family were not home at the time of the incident, narrowly escaping a major disaster.

Upon returning home, Çolak heard discussions among neighbors about concrete pieces entering an apartment through a window. She subsequently found her rooms filled with rubble and concrete debris.

Demolition Company to Cover Damages

Çolak recounted that a representative from the demolition company visited her apartment after the incident, promising to replace the broken windows. However, she claimed that no one followed up with her afterward. It has since been learned that the demolition company will cover the damages incurred by the apartment.

This incident highlights the potential risks associated with urban transformation projects, particularly in densely populated areas. Authorities are expected to investigate the matter further to ensure safety protocols are strictly followed during such operations.

The affected residents are seeking full compensation for the damages and assurances that future demolition activities will be conducted with greater caution to prevent similar occurrences.
