Istanbul Police Use Drones to Combat Dangerous Driving
Istanbul, March 13 – The Istanbul Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Branch has implemented a new strategy to curb dangerous driving behaviors, deploying drones to identify and penalize drivers who engage in what is colloquially known as ‘weaving’ or ‘cutting in’ in traffic. This comprehensive operation, conducted across 34 districts at 86 different locations, involved 300 personnel and 99 teams, leading to a significant number of penalties.
740 Drivers Penalized, 27 Vehicles Impounded
The drone-supported surveillance focused on drivers who dangerously change lanes, particularly in designated striped areas, or those who cut in front of other vehicles. The results of the operation, which took place on Thursday, March 12, indicate a strict approach to traffic violations. A total of 740 drivers received citations for various infractions under the Highway Traffic Law. Among these, 26 drivers were penalized for dangerous lane changes, 439 for failing to comply with traffic signs and signals, 73 for illegally using the right shoulder or hard shoulder to overtake, and 87 for improper lane changes.
In addition to the fines, 27 vehicles were removed from traffic, highlighting the severity of the enforcement measures. This initiative underscores the Istanbul Police Department’s commitment to improving road safety and reducing traffic-related incidents.
Focus on High-Risk Driving Behaviors
The use of drones provides an aerial perspective that allows traffic enforcement teams to more effectively monitor and document hazardous driving practices that might be difficult to observe from ground level. This technological advancement enables police to identify and address behaviors that contribute to congestion and increase the risk of accidents. The operation specifically targeted drivers who disregard traffic flow and endanger other road users by making sudden and unindicated maneuvers.
Broader Implications for Traffic Safety
This crackdown is part of a broader effort by Istanbul authorities to modernize traffic management and enhance public safety on the city’s busy roads. The increased surveillance and strict penalties are expected to serve as a deterrent against reckless driving, fostering a more disciplined driving culture. The initiative also aims to raise awareness among drivers about the importance of adhering to traffic rules and respecting other road users.
The Istanbul Police Department has indicated that similar operations will continue in the future, utilizing advanced technologies to ensure compliance with traffic laws and to create safer driving conditions for all residents and visitors in Istanbul.
