Former Rockstar North Director Confirms Istanbul GTA Plans
Former Rockstar North director Obbe Vermeij has recently shed light on long-standing rumors within the gaming community, confirming that Rockstar Games had at one point seriously considered setting a Grand Theft Auto (GTA) title in Istanbul. This revelation comes amidst ongoing discussions among players regarding the GTA series’ consistent focus on locations outside the United States.
Vermeij’s statements validate many of the whispers that have circulated for years. According to him, Rockstar Games had, in the past, extensively evaluated various international cities for potential GTA settings. These included not only Istanbul but also Tokyo, Rio de Janeiro, and Moscow. The idea of a GTA: Tokyo was reportedly close to realization, with plans for another studio in Japan to develop the game using Rockstar’s infrastructure. However, this project was ultimately canceled at the last minute.
Why GTA Remains US-Centric
Despite these past considerations, Vermeij suggests that it is highly unlikely for GTA 6 or future installments to venture outside the United States. He posits that Rockstar is unwilling to risk a multi-billion dollar franchise by deviating from its core identity. Cities like Vice City, which are deeply rooted in American pop culture, form the fundamental understanding and appeal of the series.
While some leaks have hinted at GTA 6 potentially extending into South America, Vermeij emphasizes that Rockstar’s primary focus remains on a reimagined and highly realistic Vice City. This implies that while the rumors of a GTA Istanbul were indeed true at one point, the series currently shows no signs of departing from its American roots.
The confirmation from a former director provides a definitive answer to a question that has intrigued fans for years. It highlights the creative exploration that takes place behind the scenes of major game development, even if many ideas never come to fruition. For now, it seems the vibrant streets of Istanbul, though once considered, will not be the backdrop for the next installment of the Grand Theft Auto series.
