Istanbul, January 26 – A solemn occasion turned deadly in Istanbul’s Kağıthane district yesterday, when an inheritance dispute escalated into a fatal shooting at a mother’s funeral. Mustafa Mutlu, 69, shot and killed his younger brother, Mehmet Mutlu, 52, shortly after their mother, Nuriye Mutlu, was laid to rest.
Tragedy Strikes After Funeral Prayer
The incident occurred around 4:30 PM in the Nurtepe neighborhood, at a mosque where the funeral prayer for Nuriye Mutlu had just concluded. According to initial reports, the two brothers, who had a long-standing disagreement over the division of their inheritance, began to argue after the afternoon prayer.
The argument quickly intensified. Eyewitnesses reported that Mustafa Mutlu drew a firearm and shot his brother, Mehmet Mutlu, in the head and abdomen. Emergency medical teams and police were immediately dispatched to the scene following calls from shocked onlookers.
Victim Succumbs to Injuries at Hospital
Mehmet Mutlu, who was severely wounded, was rushed by ambulance to Prof. Dr. Cemil Taşçıoğlu City Hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.
Police apprehended the suspect, Mustafa Mutlu, at the scene. A unlicensed handgun, believed to be the weapon used in the shooting, was confiscated by the Kağıthane Public Order Bureau teams. Further investigation revealed that Mustafa Mutlu has a criminal record, including 10 prior offenses, predominantly for ‘intentional injury’.
