Istanbul Airport Gears Up for Major Expansion: Fourth Runway and Increased Passenger Capacity
Istanbul Airport, a pivotal hub in global aviation, is set to significantly enhance its operational capabilities and passenger handling capacity. Selahattin Bilgen, CEO of IGA Istanbul Airport, announced that the airport’s fourth main runway will be activated in the second half of this year. This strategic development is part of ongoing investments aimed at increasing the existing terminal’s passenger capacity to a remarkable 120 million.
Bilgen highlighted the airport’s performance in the first quarter of the year, noting a 5.5% growth in passenger traffic. While slightly below the initial 8% growth target, he attributed this to the ongoing global conflicts. However, he also emphasized Istanbul Airport’s emerging perception as a ‘safe haven’ in the region, particularly evident from carriers in the Gulf region directing and parking their aircraft at the airport for extended periods.
Istanbul Airport’s Ambitious Cargo Goals: Surpassing Hong Kong?
In addition to passenger growth, Istanbul Airport is making significant strides in air cargo operations. Bilgen revealed that major cargo companies are establishing substantial logistics centers at the airport. “Investments by global players like FedEx, DHL, UPS, and Trendyol have propelled us to the top in Europe for cargo,” Bilgen stated. Last year, the airport surpassed 2 million tons of cargo. With Hong Kong currently leading globally at over 5 million tons, Bilgen expressed confidence that Istanbul Airport could reach 5.5 million tons, potentially surpassing the Asian giant.
Pioneering Sustainability: Solar Power and Water Independence
Istanbul Airport is also a leader in environmental sustainability. Bilgen proudly mentioned that IGA recycles over 35% of its solid waste and 40% of its water. “We are 30% ahead of our Net Zero Carbon target for 2050,” he affirmed. A significant milestone was achieved last year with the commissioning of a 240-megawatt solar power plant, making Istanbul Airport the world’s first major airport to generate all its electricity from renewable sources. Furthermore, through the Terso Smoz investment, the airport plans to source all its water supply independently from the city’s network.
First Quarter Performance and Future Outlook
Despite the challenges posed by global events, Istanbul Airport closed the previous year with 84.5 million passengers. The 5.5% growth in the first quarter, while slightly under target, demonstrates resilience and continued upward trajectory. The activation of the fourth runway and the expansion of passenger capacity are expected to further solidify Istanbul Airport’s position as a leading global aviation hub, not just in passenger traffic but also in cargo and sustainable operations.
