Istanbul, Turkey – Sea transportation in Istanbul and the Aegean region has been significantly impacted by powerful lodos winds. On Thursday morning, January 8, 2026, both İDO and Şehir Hatları announced the cancellation of several ferry services, while all planned ferry trips to Gökçeada and Bozcaada were also called off.
The Turkish State Meteorological Service had issued warnings regarding the lodos winds, which intensified during the night and became severe by Thursday morning. This adverse weather has led to considerable disruptions in maritime traffic across Istanbul.

Gökçeada and Bozcaada Services Halted
In addition to the Istanbul cancellations, all ferry services to Gökçeada and Bozcaada have been suspended for the day due to the ongoing adverse weather conditions. GESTAŞ Deniz Ulaşım AŞ, responsible for transportation in the Çanakkale Strait and island lines, confirmed that all Kabatepe-Gökçeada and Geyikli-Bozcaada services scheduled for today have been cancelled. It was noted that services to these islands were also cancelled yesterday.
Çanakkale Strait Closed to Transit Traffic
The strong storm has also led to the temporary closure of the Çanakkale Strait to transit vessel traffic in both directions. The Çanakkale Strait Vessel Traffic Services Directorate announced the closure via radio to captains of vessels navigating from both north and south, as the storm has increased the speed of currents in the sea since last night. GESTAŞ Deniz Ulaşım AŞ further stated that ferry services for Lapseki-Gelibolu, Çanakkale-Kilitbahir, and Çanakkale-Eceabat have also been temporarily suspended. Other routes in the region are expected to operate normally.
Passengers are advised to check the latest updates from İDO, Şehir Hatları, and GESTAŞ before planning their journeys.
