ISTANBUL – The world of architecture converged in Istanbul for one of its most significant gatherings, the 19th Global Award for Sustainable Architecture™. This year’s ceremony, themed ‘Architecture is Transformation’, saw five distinguished architects recognized for their innovative and sustainable contributions to the field.

Istanbul: A Fitting Host for Transformation

The awards, now in their 19th year, were presented at a ceremony hosted by Saint-Gobain, an official partner for the third consecutive time, and Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University. The recipients of this prestigious award are Ye Man, Doan Thanh Ha, Loreta Castro Reguera & José Pablo Ambrosi, Amelia Tavella, and Andreas Kipar.

Jana Revedin, founder of the Global Award for Sustainable Architecture Program, highlighted the significance of holding the ceremony in Istanbul for the first time, a departure from its traditional venue in Venice. Revedin emphasized that this year’s theme, ‘Architecture is Transformation’, perfectly aligns with Istanbul’s historical and dynamic character.

Why Istanbul?

“Because Istanbul is historically a multi-layered and constantly transforming city,” Revedin stated. “It is also a symbol of transformation between Asia and Europe. Therefore, Istanbul was the right choice.”

The selection of Istanbul underscores the city’s role as a bridge between cultures and a testament to continuous urban evolution. The event served as a platform to celebrate architects who embody this spirit of transformation through their commitment to sustainable practices and designs that respond to the evolving needs of the planet and its inhabitants.

The Visionary Architects Honored

The five awardees represent a diverse range of approaches to sustainable architecture, each demonstrating a profound understanding of environmental responsibility and social impact. Their work reflects a global commitment to creating structures and spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally conscious and socially beneficial.

The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture™ continues to be a crucial platform for promoting sustainable design principles and recognizing the architects who are at the forefront of this vital movement. By honoring these visionaries, the award aims to inspire future generations of architects to embrace sustainable practices and contribute to a more resilient and equitable built environment.

The event in Istanbul successfully brought together leading figures in architecture, academia, and industry, fostering dialogue and collaboration on the critical challenges and opportunities in sustainable development. The discussions and presentations throughout the ceremony reinforced the idea that architecture is indeed a powerful tool for transformation, capable of shaping a better future for all.
