Istanbul, December 24 – As the year draws to a close, Istanbul is bracing for a significant drop in temperatures, with a strong possibility of snow on New Year’s Eve. Professor Dr. Orhan Şen, Meteorology Consultant for CNN Türk, stated that temperatures in Istanbul are expected to fall to 9 degrees Celsius this weekend.
Siberian Cold Front Approaches
According to Professor Şen, a cold front originating from Siberia is anticipated to affect the region around December 30-31. “This weather will bring snow to the eastern Marmara region, including Istanbul, Bursa, Kocaeli, and Sakarya. Snowfall is also expected in Inner Aegean and Inner Anatolia,” Şen noted.
The probability of snow in Istanbul on New Year’s Eve is estimated at 65%. However, Professor Şen cautioned that due to the urban heat island effect, significant accumulation of snow might not occur within the city center.
Regional Weather Outlook for New Year’s
For those planning to celebrate the New Year in other popular Turkish destinations, Professor Şen provided a brief overview:
- Antalya: Temperatures will be around 20 degrees Celsius with rain.
- İzmir Çeşme and Muğla Bodrum: Air temperatures are expected to be around 15-16 degrees Celsius, also with rain.
Residents and visitors in Istanbul are advised to prepare for colder weather conditions as the city approaches the end of the year.
