Istanbul, June 25 – In a significant operation against drug trafficking, Istanbul Police Department’s anti-narcotics teams conducted raids in the Arnavutköy and Zeytinburnu districts, resulting in the seizure of nearly 198 kilograms of various drugs and the apprehension of 5 suspects.
Extensive Police Operation Targets Drug Traffickers
The Istanbul Police Department’s Anti-Narcotics Crimes Branch teams initiated an extensive operation aimed at preventing drug trade and apprehending suspects. Following detailed field analyses and intelligence gathering, the police identified individuals involved in drug trafficking in Arnavutköy and Zeytinburnu.
On Wednesday, June 24, simultaneous raids were carried out on two specific addresses and one taxi believed to be used by the suspects. These coordinated actions led to the immediate arrest of 5 individuals suspected of involvement in the illicit drug trade.
Large Quantity of Drugs and Weapons Confiscated
During the searches conducted at the identified addresses and within the taxi, a substantial amount of illegal substances and related paraphernalia were discovered and confiscated. The seized items included:
- 197 kilograms and 200 grams of skunk (a potent form of cannabis)
- 1 kilogram and 81 grams of cocaine
- 20 grams of hashish
- 2 long-barreled firearms
- 111 rounds of ammunition
- 6 magazines for firearms
- 2 precision scales
The discovery of such a large quantity of drugs, particularly skunk and cocaine, alongside weaponry, underscores the scale of the drug trafficking operation that was dismantled by the police.
Suspects Face Serious Charges
Following their arrest, the 5 suspects are now facing serious legal proceedings. An investigation has been launched against them on charges of ‘Violating the Firearms Law’ and ‘Manufacturing and Trading Narcotic or Stimulant Substances’. These charges carry significant penalties under Turkish law, reflecting the severity of their alleged crimes.
This operation highlights the ongoing efforts of the Istanbul Police Department to combat drug trafficking and maintain public safety. The success of such operations is crucial in disrupting the supply chains of illegal drugs and reducing their availability within the city.
Further details regarding the ongoing investigation and the judicial process for the arrested suspects are expected to be released as the case progresses.
