Istanbul Unveils Extensive Preparations for UEFA Europa League Final
Istanbul, January 15 – Istanbul is set to host the UEFA Europa League Final on May 20 at Beşiktaş Stadium, and a comprehensive organization plan is being put into action. Coordinated by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) and approved by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Council, the plan aims to ensure a safe, orderly, and accessible event for all attendees.
The IMM Council’s second meeting for January 2026, held in Fatih Saraçhane and chaired by Deputy Speaker Gökhan Gümüşdağ, unanimously approved the detailed arrangements. These measures cover transportation, security, health, environmental management, and fan areas, addressing numerous aspects to facilitate a smooth final match.
Free Public Transport for Fans on Final Day
A key decision from the council meeting grants free access to IMM-operated public transportation lines for all match ticket holders on the day of the final. Additionally, accredited personnel will receive special Istanbulkart passes, valid for free travel on subscription lines for a specified period. The costs for these passes will be covered by the relevant departments.
Enhanced Stadium Environment and Pedestrian Access
To improve pedestrian safety around Beşiktaş Stadium, specific arrangements will be made. Designated walking paths will be created for pedestrian access to the stadium, complemented by directional signs and maps. Sidewalks and ramps will be renovated to ensure easy access for disabled fans, promoting inclusivity.
Dedicated Fan Zones and Emergency Response
Beşiktaş Square and Taksim Square have been designated as fan gathering areas, while Karaköy Coastal Park will serve as a fan festival zone. These areas will undergo environmental improvements, with portable toilets and additional waste containers installed as needed. Inside and around the stadium, as well as in the event areas, fire, health, and emergency response teams will be on standby. Municipal police and security units will collaborate with law enforcement to intensify inspections against counterfeit product sales, black market activities, street vendors, and unauthorized operations.
Traffic Management and Information Dissemination
Road adjustments and temporary closures will be implemented on routes leading to the stadium during the final week, where deemed necessary. To keep fans informed, announcements will be made in both Turkish and English via digital platforms, and mobile LED screens will be utilized around the stadium.
Waste Management and Environmental Practices
In line with UEFA standards, a robust waste management plan will be enacted. This includes the segregation and collection of waste generated at the stadium and event areas, promoting recycling and zero-waste practices. Waste will be systematically removed from the areas within specified timeframes.
Airport to City Center Coordination
Special planning is underway for metro and bus lines to facilitate the transfer of fans from Istanbul and Sabiha Gökçen airports to the city center. Informational and directional personnel will also be deployed at the airports to assist arriving spectators.
