Istanbul Taxi Driver Fined Heavily for Overcharging Tourist

Istanbul, June 10 – An Istanbul taxi driver has been issued a substantial fine of 140,500 Turkish Liras and had his driver’s license suspended for 60 days after an incident involving a tourist passenger. The driver, identified as F.A., allegedly transported a tourist without activating the taximeter and demanded an exorbitant fare of 4,300 TL.

Investigation Launched After Social Media Post

The Istanbul Police Department Traffic Control Branch initiated an investigation after a video circulating on social media showed a commercial taxi driver transporting a tourist without using the taximeter. The footage quickly garnered attention, prompting authorities to act.

Upon reviewing the evidence, it was determined that the taxi driver picked up a tourist from Arnavutköy and transported them to Fatih. During the journey, the driver failed to activate the taximeter and subsequently demanded a significantly inflated fare from the passenger. The tourist reportedly objected to the 4,300 TL charge.

Driver Apprehended and Penalized

Following the identification of the driver, F.A. (31), he was apprehended along with his commercial taxi. He was then taken to a police station for further processing.

The taxi driver was issued a total administrative fine of 140,500 Turkish Liras for violations of the Highway Traffic Law, specifically for “not using a taximeter in cars providing taxi services” and “not using a seatbelt.”

In addition to the monetary penalty, F.A.’s driver’s license was suspended for 60 days due to exceeding his penalty points. His vehicle was also impounded, and information was forwarded to the relevant institution for the cancellation of his “commercial taxi driver card.”

Released Pending Further Judicial Action

After completing the procedures at the police department, F.A. was released by judicial authorities. His case file, related to the charge of “fraud,” was sent to the judicial authorities for further action.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding taxi services in Istanbul and the measures being taken by authorities to ensure fair practices and protect tourists from exploitation. The swift response and severe penalties imposed aim to deter similar incidents in the future and uphold the reputation of the city’s transportation services.
