ITU and Karabakh University Seal Collaboration in Education and Science
Ankara, January 22 – A significant memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering cooperation in the fields of education and science was formally signed between Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and Karabakh University. The signing ceremony, held at the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), marked a pivotal moment for academic collaboration between Turkey and Azerbaijan.
The event saw the participation of prominent figures, including YÖK President Erol Özvar, Azerbaijan’s Minister of Science and Education Emin Amrullayev, ITU Rector Hasan Mandal, and Karabakh University Rector Şahin Bayramov.
Elevating Bilateral Cooperation Beyond Undergraduate Studies
YÖK President Erol Özvar emphasized that the objective extends beyond merely continuing cooperation at the undergraduate level. He stated, “Our aim is to elevate the cooperation between Turkey and Azerbaijan to higher levels, encompassing postgraduate studies at master’s and doctoral levels, as well as post-doctoral research.”
Özvar highlighted the rapid progress of Karabakh University, which was established in 2023. “Karabakh University, founded in 2023, is steadily advancing towards becoming a center of knowledge and wisdom in the region, boasting seven faculties, 27 programs, and over 2,000 students in a short period,” he remarked. He further added that the planned opening of a Faculty of Medicine within Karabakh University in the 2025-2026 academic year serves as a concrete manifestation of this vision.
ITU’s Expertise to Bolster Karabakh University’s Development
The YÖK President underscored the invaluable contribution that ITU’s long-standing expertise and international reputation would bring to Karabakh University’s growth. “With the memorandum of understanding to be signed today, the knowledge and experience of an established institution with an international reputation such as Istanbul Technical University will make a very strong contribution to the development process of Karabakh University,” Özvar stated.
He elaborated on the various facets of this collaboration, including student and faculty exchange programs, joint research projects, dual degree programs, and particularly collaborative laboratory work in the field of engineering. These initiatives are expected to form the initial steps of a comprehensive partnership.
Formalization of the Agreement
Following President Özvar’s remarks, during which he extended his gratitude to all parties involved and wished for the success of the MoU, the rectors of both universities proceeded to formally sign the memorandum of understanding.
This agreement is anticipated to significantly strengthen academic ties and scientific advancements between Turkey and Azerbaijan, fostering a new era of educational and research collaboration.
