Miners’ Hunger Strike: Solidarity Calls in Ankara and Istanbul

Ankara, April 28 – The Bağımsız Maden-İş (Independent Mine-Workers’ Union) has issued a call for solidarity with miners who have been on an 8-day hunger strike, facing repeated police intervention. The union announced simultaneous gatherings in Ankara and Istanbul on the evening of April 28, urging public support for the workers who are demanding unpaid wages and their rightful benefits.

Eight Days of Hunger Strike and Police Intervention

The miners’ protest, which has garnered significant public attention, stems from long-standing issues of unpaid wages and alleged usurpation of their rights. The Bağımsız Maden-İş emphasized the critical health risks associated with the prolonged hunger strike and stressed the importance of expanding solidarity efforts.

A statement from the union highlighted that the workers, who have been on hunger strike for eight days, have faced police intervention multiple times. This has prompted the union to appeal to the public for support and to raise awareness about the miners’ plight.

Simultaneous Gatherings in Ankara and Istanbul

To amplify their call for solidarity, the union announced two concurrent gatherings:

  • In Ankara, the gathering will take place at 6:00 PM in front of Yıldızlar Holding.
  • In Istanbul, a similar event will be held at 7:00 PM in front of the TMSF (Savings Deposit Insurance Fund).

The Bağımsız Maden-İş has extended an invitation to all non-governmental organizations, political party organizations, and citizens to participate in these demonstrations, aiming to create a strong show of support for the struggling miners.

Miners’ Demands and Ongoing Struggle

The core of the miners’ protest revolves around their demands for long-overdue wages and the restoration of what they describe as their usurped rights. This struggle has been ongoing for an extended period, and the hunger strike represents an escalation of their efforts to bring attention to their grievances.

Union officials have underscored the increasing health risks faced by the miners as their hunger strike continues. They have reiterated the need for greater solidarity from the public and various organizations to pressure relevant authorities to address the miners’ demands.

Public Awareness and Future Actions

The situation of the striking miners continues to be a prominent topic in public discourse. The Bağımsız Maden-İş hopes that these solidarity gatherings will further raise public awareness and encourage swift action to resolve the issues faced by the miners.

The union has not indicated further actions beyond these gatherings, but the emphasis on increasing solidarity suggests that they are prepared to continue their advocacy until their demands are met. The outcome of these gatherings and any subsequent negotiations will be closely watched by the public and labor organizations.
