ANKARA – The Turkish National Intelligence Organization (MIT) has conducted a successful operation, capturing ‘Yahya’ (Mehmet Gören), a key figure within ISIS’s so-called Khorasan Province, who was assigned to carry out suicide bombings. Gören was apprehended in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region and subsequently brought to Turkey.
MIT’s Intelligence Work Uncovers Key ISIS Figure
MIT’s intelligence efforts identified a Turkish-origin individual operating within ISIS in the Afghanistan-Pakistan area. This individual was found to be actively involved in ISIS camps, rising through the ranks to a leadership position over time. Further investigation revealed this person to be Mehmet Gören, code-named ‘Yahya’, who had previously collaborated with Özgür Altun, code-named ‘Abu Yasir Al Turki’. Altun was also captured and brought to Turkey in a prior operation, where he was subsequently arrested. Gören was actively involved in facilitating the transfer of ISIS operatives from Turkey to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region.
Suicide Mission Assignment Discovered
Intelligence reports also indicated that Gören had agreed to carry out suicide attacks targeting civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Europe. Following the precise identification of his current location in the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, the terrorist was apprehended and repatriated to Turkey.
Gören’s Path to ISIS Leadership and Suicide Mission
It was determined that Mehmet Gören transitioned from Turkey to the Afghanistan-Pakistan region, where he quickly ascended to a leadership role within ISIS camps. He reportedly survived air strikes conducted against ISIS elements in Pakistan. In his testimony, the ISIS terrorist provided detailed information regarding his contact with Özgür Altun, who managed the transfer of operatives from Turkey to the Afghanistan-Pakistan area. Gören also disclosed details about the various armed and religious training he received within ISIS, as well as the assignment he was given to carry out suicide attacks on behalf of the organization.
Preventing ISIS’s Operational Plans
The operations conducted by MIT have effectively thwarted ISIS’s plans for attacks targeting Turkey. Furthermore, these efforts have exposed ISIS’s recruitment methods and allowed for the seizure of their operational plans. This successful apprehension marks a significant blow to the terrorist organization’s capabilities and its network in the region.
