Ankara-Led Operation Targets ‘Red Meat’ Manipulation: 30 Suspects Detained Across 8 Provinces
Ankara, March 31 – An operation spanning eight provinces, spearheaded by Ankara, has resulted in the detention of 30 suspects, including public officials. The individuals are accused of manipulating red meat prices, restricting supply, and distributing diseased meat. The investigation was launched following complaints to the Presidential Communication Center (CİMER) and social media posts, along with a criminal complaint from the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Investigation Uncovers Price Manipulation and Unhealthy Meat Distribution
According to a statement from the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, the General Investigation Bureau initiated a probe into allegations of price manipulation. The investigation revealed that carcass meat prices, which had remained stable until the end of October 2025, were artificially inflated by certain livestock groups. Carcass meat supplier companies allegedly halted sales by claiming a lack of stock or unavailable animals for slaughter, thereby restricting supply. Furthermore, it was discovered that diseased animals were being slaughtered, and their meat was subsequently introduced into the market.
Evidence gathered through wiretaps, testimonies, and other concrete findings confirmed the involvement of large-scale livestock breeders and carcass meat suppliers operating in various provinces. The suspects are believed to have engaged in these activities as part of an organized scheme, committing crimes such as “aggravated fraud,” “price manipulation,” “refusal to sell goods and services,” and “trading of spoiled or altered food.”
Detentions and Ongoing Search for Fugitives
Following these findings, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office issued arrest warrants and search and seizure orders for a total of 33 individuals. This included 28 suspects involved in the meat manipulation scheme across Ankara, Kırşehir, Kayseri, Konya, Bursa, Balıkesir, Istanbul, and Sakarya, as well as 5 public officials accused of leaking information about inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.
Teams from the Ankara Provincial Police Department’s Organized Crime Branch conducted simultaneous raids at the identified addresses. As a result, 30 of the 33 suspects with arrest warrants were apprehended. Efforts to locate and apprehend the remaining three fugitives are ongoing.
The Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office stated, “The investigation is meticulously continuing for all suspects and all individuals found or to be found to have endangered public health.”
Background and Economic Impact
The manipulation of red meat prices has been a recurring concern, impacting both consumers and the agricultural sector. Such illicit activities can lead to significant economic instability, affecting the livelihoods of legitimate farmers and increasing food costs for the general public. The alleged restriction of supply further exacerbates these issues, creating artificial scarcity and driving up prices beyond market value.
The involvement of public officials in leaking inspection information raises serious questions about corruption and the integrity of regulatory processes. This aspect of the investigation underscores the need for robust oversight and accountability within government institutions to prevent such abuses of power.
The operation highlights the government’s commitment to combating organized crime and protecting consumer rights. The swift action taken by law enforcement and judicial authorities aims to restore trust in the food supply chain and ensure fair market practices.
Future Implications and Consumer Confidence
The successful apprehension of a significant number of suspects is expected to have a deterrent effect on similar illicit activities in the future. It sends a clear message that manipulation of essential goods and endangerment of public health will not be tolerated.
Consumers are encouraged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities related to food supply and pricing. The CİMER platform and social media channels have proven to be effective avenues for citizens to voice their concerns, leading to concrete actions by authorities.
The ongoing investigation will likely provide further insights into the extent of the network involved and the full scope of their operations. The public awaits the final outcomes of the legal proceedings, hoping for justice and a more secure food market.
