Ottoman Tradition of Goodness Revived in Istanbul: Debts of 32,000 Families Erased

Istanbul, March 20 – The benevolent Ottoman tradition of the ‘Zimem Defteri,’ where the debts of those in need are paid off, has been revived this Ramadan in Istanbul. Under the leadership of the Istanbul Governorship, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and philanthropists continued this centuries-old practice, resulting in the settlement of debts for 32,345 families across 2,150 grocery stores in 39 districts of Istanbul.

A Bridge of Transparent and Heartfelt Solidarity

The initiative, coordinated by the Istanbul Governorship, saw philanthropists and NGOs working hand-in-hand to keep the ‘Zimem Defteri’ tradition alive this Ramadan. The debt books in local grocery stores across the city’s 39 districts were closed one by one, providing much-needed relief to families in financial hardship. The project successfully visited 2,150 grocery stores, and the debts of a remarkable 32,345 families were paid off, amounting to a total of 73.5 million Turkish Lira (TL) lifted from their shoulders. Istanbul Governor Davut Gül actively participated in the field, personally delivering the donations from philanthropists to their recipients.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gül emphasized that the implementation of this practice proceeded through a completely transparent process. Teams comprising district governors, mukhtars (village or neighborhood headmen), and social service experts officially recorded the debts. The primary objective of this initiative was to ensure that needy citizens could enter the Bayram holiday without any debt burden, experiencing peace and tranquility.

This large-scale organization highlights a significant act of community support and generosity, echoing the historical spirit of compassion and mutual aid that characterized the Ottoman Empire. The revival of the ‘Zimem Defteri’ tradition serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of solidarity in contemporary society, especially during periods of economic strain. The initiative not only provided financial relief but also fostered a sense of community and hope among the beneficiaries. The involvement of various stakeholders, from governmental bodies to local businesses and individual donors, underscores the collective effort required to address societal needs effectively.

The successful execution of this project in Istanbul sets a precedent for similar initiatives, demonstrating how historical practices of social welfare can be adapted to modern contexts to achieve impactful results. The focus on transparency and direct aid ensures that the assistance reaches those who need it most, reinforcing trust and encouraging further philanthropic endeavors. As Istanbul continues to grow and evolve, such traditions play a crucial role in maintaining the social fabric and ensuring that no one is left behind.
