Ankara, February 8 – A retaining wall supporting a 4-story apartment building in Ankara’s Gölbaşı district collapsed overnight, prompting the precautionary evacuation of five buildings and displacing 81 residents. The incident occurred on 886th Street in Şafak Mahallesi, leading to an immediate response from authorities.

Emergency Response and Evacuation

Following the collapse, teams from the Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, along with officials from the Chamber of Engineers, were dispatched to the scene. As a precautionary measure, the building directly affected by the retaining wall collapse, along with four adjacent apartment buildings, were evacuated during the night.

Police tape was used to cordon off the entrances to the evacuated buildings, and police, health, and social services teams were deployed to the area to assist the affected residents. A total of 81 individuals from 29 households were evacuated. One family was provided accommodation at the Metropolitan Municipality’s Şefkatevi in Ulus, while the remaining families sought refuge with relatives.

Gölbaşı District Governor Erol Rüstemoğlu arrived at the scene during the night to coordinate the ongoing efforts. The Gölbaşı Municipality issued a statement regarding the incident, confirming the presence of key officials and teams on site. The statement read, “Following the retaining wall collapse on 886th Street in Şafak Mahallesi, our District Governor Erol Rüstemoğlu, our Mayor Yakup Odabaşı, officials from the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, and our municipal teams are continuing their investigations on site.”

The cause of the retaining wall collapse is currently under investigation. Authorities are assessing the structural integrity of the affected buildings and the surrounding area to ensure the safety of residents.
